A fine copy in dust jacket. The Hungarian immigrant who became one of the Smithsonian Institution's most successful collector s of natural history specimens. While at Fort Tejon in California's Tehachapi Mountains, Xantus kept up this correspondence with the Smithsonian. He faithfully described his findings, and shipped back specimens from the surrounding Sierra and desert. He is credited with the discovery of many new species in the American West.
