A very fine copy with pictorial dust jacket. Excellent work on the history and construction of various types of boats of Venice (both historic and current) with an abundance of detailed technical plans and sectional drawings, along with line drawings showing the various boats in their natural setting. At the rear are 16 detailed folding plans for each of the boats discussed. Covers the history, description, and construction of all the various Venetian Lagoon Boats including the Sandolo, Mascareta, S'ciopon, Puparin, Gondola, Topo, Topa, Sanpierota, Batela, Batela a coa de Gambero, Caorlina, Batelon, and the Peata. Also includes sections on a "reconstruction of a 16th century Gondola;" "the Gondola: a note on its development;" and the "Venetian style of rowing" showing the method and reasoning of rowing, usually with one oar. Many of the detailed plans were taken from data in the Museo Storico Navale (in Venice), or from exact measurements of existing boats. Both authors are naval architects; the English translation is by Patricia Coales.
