Hume, Rev. A.

The Learned Societies and Printing Clubs of the United Kingdom

London Longman, Brown, Green, and Longmans 1847, First edition. Presentation inscription, signed, "to Edward Dobson, from the Author." From the library of Carl I. Wheat, noted historian and author. Original blind-stamped green cloth, lettered in gilt on spine. Rebacked with portion of original spine laid down, else a fine copy. Scarce. Hume's first book identifies ninety-five learned societies and twenty-two printing clubs in existence in England. The printing clubs were formed to publish scholarly books on subjects from the orient to ancient Scottish history. Hume's account includes a brief history of the club, the types of books printed, the names of the club's officers, and a list of books already published. The Roxburghe Club is noted as the first of these clubs.
