Head, Sir Francis B[ond]
A Narrative
London John Murray 1839, Second edition. Pp. viii, 488, 38 + 8 [ads]. Appendices. Original light green cloth, lettered in gilt on spine and front cover (cover with gilt Canadian flag device and quotation). Spine faded, very slight foxing to first few preliminary leaves, corners just showing, else a fine copy, internally fine and clean, uncut and untrimmed. Sir Francis Bond Head held the post of Lieut-Governor of Upper Canada from 1835 to 1837. Basically, this work contains the author's controversial views on all manner of things relating to the government of Upper Canada. It "details the origin and suppression of the Mackenzie rebellion, and is a vindication of the author's administration" (Sabin). The author was responsible for the suppression of the Rebellion led by William Lyon Mackenzie in 1837. "The pressure of politics kept Governor Head from detailing his own travel experiences in this analysis of the troubles of 1837 which he was deputed to defuse. This lively book, by an experienced fiction writer, throws side-lights on the country around York which he visited on official business" (Waterston). The appendices include "Memorandum on the Aborigines of North America;" and "Addresses to Sir Francis B. Head from the Legislatures of the British North American Collonies... on His Resignation of the Government of Upper Canada." The 8-page Publisher's catalogue at the end of this volume is dated, "February, 1839." [Sabin: 31133; Waterston: p.64].
