Edinburgh Oliver & Boyd 1832, First edition. 12mo. 444pp. Folding map, nine wood engravings including title vignette. Contemporary three-quarter calf, marbled boards. Corners show light wear, gilt-decoration to spine worn off, general rubbing to calf binding, some browning to folding map. Overall, a very good copy, internally bright and clean. A general history of discovery, including the voyages of the Portuguese, French, and Spaniards; the Russian and English voyages; Hearne and Sir Alexander Mackenzie; Franklin and Beechey. The second half of the book deals with the natural history including quadrupeds, birds, fish, botany, and geological features. Patrick Fraser Tytler (1791-1849) practiced law for twenty years, and then devoted himself chiefly to his literary interests. While working on his masterpiece, "History of Scotland," he wrote a number of miscellaneous works, includng "Life of the Admirable Crichton," "Lives of Scottish Worthies," etc., as well as the text offered here, which went through numerous printings. The first edition is scarce. The appendix includes, "Remarks on a Late Memoir of Sebastian Cabot, with a Vindication of Richard Hakluyt." [Cox, II: p.526; Sabin: 97657].
