Birkbeck, Morris
Letters from Illinois
Dublin Thomas Larkin 1818, First Dublin edition, published the same year as the first (Philadelphia) edition. The Dublin edition is quite scarce. xv, [1], 112pp. New three-quarter leatherette, marbled boards. A fine copy. "The letters contain a great deal of information about social and economic conditions in Illinois" (Graff). "The author, an English Utopian, bought 16,000 acres on English Prairie, Ill., in 1817 and founded the town of New Albion, which was settled by English emigrants. The letters were written to people in England in reply to questions relating the economic and social conditions in the West" (Soliday). "It is an intelligent, discriminating statement by a foreigner who soon came to understand his adopted country, and did much to inspire and wisely direct English emigration into Illinois" (Larned). [Howes I: B-467; Howes II: B-463; this Dublin edition not noted in Sabin, Graff, Eberstadt, Larned: 1759; Soliday, or Decker].
