FIELDS, WILLIAM, COMPILER
The Literary and Miscellaneous Scrap Book: Consisting of Tales and Anecdotes-Biographical, Historical, Patriotic, Moral, Religious, and Sentimental Pieces, in Prose and Poetry.
Knoxville, Tenn.: Printed and Published by William Fields, Jr., 1833. First edition. Wright I, 956,recording two locations, to which the NUC adds three. 8vo, modern brown quarter cloth and marbled boards (original endpapers retained), leather label, gilt lettering, 600 pages. One plate. ¶ A wildly miscellaneous anthology of extracts of famous authors (Byron, Catherine Beecher, Noah Webster, Willis Gaylord Clark, Irving, Mrs. Sigourney, Mrs. Hemens, etc.), with several original contributions from contemporary Tennesseans. Fields’ Scrap Book was one of the earliest works of its kind published in Tennessee, and surprisingly it went through numerous editions and reprints for almost 60 years and was picked up by Lippincott in Philadelphia, who issued several different editions of it. This first edition is rare. Paper browned and foxed, but sound; very good copy.
