MURRAY, CHARLES AUGUSTUS
The Prairie-Bird.
London: Richard Bentley, 1844. First edition. Sadleir 1818; Wolff 5022; Sabin 51489. 3 vols, 8vo, later brown half morocco, t.e.g., others untrimmed, gilt rules and lettering. ¶ A novel based on Murray’s travels in the Western United States between 1835 and 1838, when he lived for a time with a tribe of Pawnees and which he later wrote about in his factual and highly regarded Travels in North America (1839). Toward the end of his tour, Murray fell in love with Elise Wadsworth, a resident of Niagara, but her father disapproved of Murray and forbade any communication between the two. Prairie-Bird contains a carefully veiled message of Murray’s continued love for Elise, which is alleged to be the only communication between them until after her father died in 1848. They were married the next year. Bookplate of Clement Shorter on the front paste-downs. Fine copy.
