LOWELL, JAMES RUSSELL
Poems . . . Second Series.
Cambridge: Published by George Nichols; Boston: B. B. Mussey, 1848. First edition. BAL 13066, binding B (no priority). 8vo, original blind-stamped blue cloth, gilt lettering. ¶ Lowell’s second substantial collection of poetry, published at the height of his early popularity, with his Fable for Critics and Biglow Papers released later the same year. Many of the poems touch on the recent death of Lowell’s daughter and several others are anti-slavery in theme. Cloth a little rubbed, particularly at the head and foot of the spine; very good copy.
