BAL 5926; Pye, Ticknor and Fields, 31; Merle Johnson, You Know These Lines!, page 15. 8vo, original blind-stamped brown cloth, gilt lettering. ¶ Field’s first book, preceded by the pamphlet Anniversary Poem (1838) and numerous contributions to literary annuals. The most famous (or infamous) lines here are the oft-quoted “‘We are lost!’ the captain shouted / As he staggered down the stairs,” from the “Ballad of a Tempest.” Cloth just slightly rubbed; very good copy.
