IRVING, WASHINGTON

The Atlantic Souvenir for 1859.

New York: Derby & Jackson, 1859. Second issue, abridged, of the gift book testimonial to Lewis Gaylord Clark, which originally appeared as the Knickerbocker Gallery (1855). Cf. BAL 10186; Thompson, American Literary Annuals and Gift Books, page 132. 8vo, publisher’s gilt- and blind-stamped brown morocco, a.e.g. Frontis portrait (of Washington Irving) and 11 plates. ¶ Contains the first appearance of Irving’s “Conversations with Talma,” which was later reprinted in Spanish Papers (1866). ¶ The Knickerbocker Gallery, edited by John Francis and others, had been intended to raise money for long-time Knickerbocker editor L. G. Clark, but the cost of production had only allowed the publishers to break even. This reissue, intended to make a profit for Clark, cuts the number of plates from 49 and keeps only 32 of the original 55 contributions. It is still an elaborate and attractive example of a mid-19th century gift book. Edges slightly rubbed; fine copy.
