PUCKLE, JAMES
Bibliographical Notes on a Collection of Editions of the Book Known as Puckle's Club from the Library of a Member of the Rowfant Club as Shown at the Club House, March 1896. With an Introduction by Austin Dobson.
Cleveland: The Rowfant Club, 1899. First edition, one of 175 numbered copies. Royal 8vo, blue-greencloth, gilt lettering, untrimmed. Portraits and facsimiles. ¶ A bibliography of James Puckle’s work of moral reflections, The Club: Or, a Dialogue between Father and Son, first published in 1711, which went through numerous editions until interest in it waned at the end of the 19th century. Little was written about Puckle until 1872 when George Steinman Steinman [sic] privately printed a pamphlet entitled The Author of “The Club” Identified, which is described in this bibliography, with a facsimile of its title page, which has a facsimile inscription by the author. Much is made about the rarity of this pamphlet (20 or fewer copies, etc.) in the text of the bibliography. Carefully sewn into this copy is the actual pamphlet that is described in the bibliography, as inscribed by Steinman, and it is apparently uncommon: not recorded in the NUC. Fine copy.
