New-York: Printed by T. & J. Swords, 1804. First edition. American Bibliography 6520; Sabin 33809. 8vo, contemporary calf (worn; hinges cracked, but holding), red morocco label, gilt lettering. Frontis portrait and one plate. ¶ Poems, essays and miscellaneous pieces from the Revolutionary soldier, statesman and associate of Washington. In addition to reprinting Humphreys’ biography of General Israel Putnam and his patriotic verses, this edition adds his “Dissertation on the Breed of Spanish Sheep called Merino” - a breed which Humphreys introduced to the United States. ¶ A presentation copy, inscribed in ink on the copyright page to “Mr. [Benjamin?] Vaughan / from his friend & / hble. servt. / D. Humphreys.” A good, sound copy.
