Buchbeschreibung

HARTE, BRET

Condensed Novels.

Boston: James R. Osgood, 1871. Second edition, with two additional stories not in the 1867 edition.BAL 7255. 8vo, original purple cloth, gilt lettering. Frontis and one plate by Sol Etynge. ¶ Of the two stories first collected here, one parodies Charles Reade, while “Lothaw” parodies Disraeli’s Lothair. Mounted on the front free endpaper is an autograph sentiment from James T. Fields (who had left Fields, Osgood and Co. in 1871), signed and dated November 17th, ’73. Attractive contemporary Scranton, Pa. bookseller’s ticket on the front paste-down, and on the rear paste-down is a positively dreadful modern bookplate a Kevin Mac Donnell, who at least had the sense to put it on the rear free endpaper. This Kevin Mac Donnell is obviously not to be confused with the bookseller from Austin, Texas. Spine faded and a little rubbed; very good copy.
