GLOUX, OLIVER

[Ten novels bound in three volumes:] The Missouri Outlaws; The Prairie Flower; The Indian Scout; The Trappers of Arkansas; The Border Rifles; The Freebooters; The White Scalper; The Guide of the Desert; The Insurgent Chief; [&] The Flying Horsemen. By Gustave Aimard [pseud].

London: George Vickers, 1876-77. Mixed editions and issues (at least one is the first edition in English and the other nine are probably second editions in English). Cf. Sadleir 3395a who had all 29 in this series, but few of them had dated title pages. 3 vols, 8vo, contemporary maroon quarter calf, marbled sides, black leather labels, gilt lettering. ¶ A nice gathering of the popular tales of American frontier life by the Frenchman Oliver Gloux (1818-1883), which were first translated into English and published in the yellowback format beginning in 1860. In 1876 Percy B. St. John was contracted by the publisher Vickers to translate the Missouri Outlaws and revise and edit the other 28 titles in the series, with brief prefaces. ¶ Gloux is an interesting, almost mythic figure of the dime novel tradition, alternately known as the Dumas of the Indians and the Fenimore Cooper of France. He came to the U.S. as a young midshipman and is said to have lived among the Indians in the Arkansas, where he learned the skills of frontier life. Edges worn; bindings a little soiled; very good copy.
