MACKAYE, PERCY WALLACE

Johnny Crimson: A Legend of Hollis Hall . . . Cover Design by Eric Pape.

Boston: Kiley, Printer, 1895. First edition, one of only 50 copies printed. Small folio, original pictorial wrappers, 22 pages. Frontis. ¶ The first book by MacKaye, a Harvard poet whose reputation during his lifetime was considerable - particularly among the literati, Robert Frost included - but whose luster has dulled. Johnny Crimson, published when MacKaye was a Sophomore at Harvard, is a tale in verse about student pranks at Harvard 100 years earlier. The cover illustration must be an early example of Pape’s work. A few slight stains; fine copy.
