GARLAND, HAMLIN

Main-Travelled Roads: Six Mississippi Valley Stories.

Boston: Arena Publishing Co., 1891. First edition, cloth issue. Wright III, 2115. 8vo, original blue cloth, silver lettering. ¶ Garland’s first substantial book (preceded only by the play Under the Wheel) which foreshadows all of his early realistic fiction on working men and women, particularly Midwestern farmers. This original edition did not sell well, but was extensively reviewed and praised as the work of a promising young writer. There were numerous subsequent editions (including one by Stone & Kimball). ¶ Inscribed on the front free endpaper “For Miss Minna Smith / My Friendly Critic - much / valued. / Hamlin Garland / Roxbury. / Nov. 3/91.” Minna Smith and her sister Gertrude were minor Boston authors and close to the circle of authors (Mary Wilkins Freeman, Alice Brown, Bradford Torrey, Alice Guiney, et al.) that nurtured the young Garland and listened to and commented on his literary lectures. Poor quality paper a little browned; very good copy.
