M'CALEB, THOMAS, COMPILER

The Louisiana Book: Selections from the Literature of the State. Edited, with a Preface and with Biographical, Critical and Explanatory Notes . . .

New Orleans: R. F. Straughan, Publisher, 1894. First edition. 4to, original maroon cloth (a little worn and soiled; some foxing), gilt lettering. Frontis and seven plates. ¶ An interesting, but biased, anthology and account of Louisiana writers, including useful biographical information on many obscure writers. The contents are divided into historical sketches, oratory, essays, fiction, drama and poetry. George Washington Cable, a celebrated native son, is given scant notice, and there are two essays denouncing his views on civil rights (which were progressive) and his fictional interpretations of Creoles. Very good copy.
