Soane, George, Translator

Specimens of German Romance. Selected and Translated from Various Authors.

London: Printed for Geo. B. Whittaker, 1826. First edition. Wolff 6476; NCBEL III, 1139. 3 vols, 8vo, later green half morocco, marbled boards, gilt decorations and lettering. Three frontispieces by George Cruikshank. Half-title in volume two only (probably as called for). ¶ A collection of five contemporary German tales, including The Master Flea by Hoffman (Der Meister Floh) which Wolff speculates is its first appearance in English. Sloane (1790-1860) was a prolific writer and translator, his most famous translation being La Motte-Fouqué’s Undine. This present work was published the year before Carlyle’s similar German Romance: Specimens of its Chief Authors, and apparently the two translators were aware of each other’s work, as neither duplicates the other. ¶ Bookplate of E.D. Church on the front endpapers and at the foot of each spine is the gilt ownership stamp of “Mackay.” Binding a little stained; very good copy.
