First edition, published by subscription with each volume signed by Joubert. 3 vols, 8vo, contemporary quarter vellum, marbled boards, contrasting morocco labels, gilt decorations and lettering. 30 engraved folding tables and 37 engraved pages listing artists and their monograms. List of subscribers in volume 3. ¶ A comprehensive dictionary to European engraving from the early 15th century to the end of the 18th century, which records over 600 artists and their works, alphabetically arranged, with chronological tables at the conclusion and keys to identifying the monogram of each engraver. The manual is preceded by an essay on the history of engraving and is followed by an essay on the advent of lithography and its influence on print making and engraving. Edges slightly rubbed; fine, handsome copy.
