FESSENDEN, THOMAS GREEN

Original Poems.

London: Printed by J. Cundee, Albion Press, for T. Hurst, 1804. First edition. 12mo, contemporary speckled calf, black leather label, gilt rules and lettering. Bound without the half-title. ¶ Fessenden (1771-1837), born in Walpole, New Hampshire, lived in London when this, his second book, was published. Almost all of the poems are political in nature, with numerous attacks on the “Republican form of government,” its leaders and affairs. Upon Fessenden’s return to the states in 1805, he published Democracy Unveiled; or, Tyranny Stripped of the Garb of Patriotism. By Christopher Caustic, L.L.D., and later an interesting poem about the role of women in society: The Ladies Monitor, A Poem (1818). Edges a little rubbed; fine copy.
