London: Smith, Elder, 1868. First English edition. Clark A26.2.b; noted under BAL 7632. 2 vols in 1, 8vo, original blind-stamped terra-cotta cloth, gilt lettering. ¶ Smith, Elder had the rights to publish the English edition of Hawthorne’s Notebooks, and on the eve of publication of their fine two-volume edition John Camden Hotten announced that his cheaper edition (a piracy) was soon to be issued. Smith, Elder immediately countered with a less expensive issue of two volumes in one, the first issue of which has both title pages of the original issue, as here. Cloth somewhat soiled; very good copy.
