London: Howe & Co., 1890. First edition. Not in NCBEL, which acknowledges that there are a number of Lucas’ books not listed. 12mo, original mustard yellow cloth, black lettering. ¶ E. V. Lucas’ first book, a small collection of entertaining youthful verses with numerous literary references and allusions to other poets and poetry. The publishers inserted a short preface without Lucas’ permission which distraught the young writer so much that he “lost all interest, did everything I could to conceal its existence, was in agony when it was mentioned in my presence and some years later, bought up the whole edition and destroyed it” - Lucas’ autobiography Reading, Writing and Remembering (1932). The offensive preface, often lacking in copies, is present here. ¶ Laid in is an a.n.s. from Lucas to Augustine Birrell, saying that he is sorry to hear that Birrell is in poor health. Front hinge starting; cloth a little soiled; very good copy.
