Alsop, Richard, Timothy Dwight & Lemuel Hopkins

The Political Green-House for the Year 1798. Addressed to the Readers of the Hartford Courant, January 1st, 1799.

Hartford: Hudson & Goodwin, [1799]. First edition. Evans 35634; Wegelin 745; Sabin 965. 12mo, modern dark green half morocco, marbled boards, gilt lettering. ¶ A collaborative poem by three of the Hartford Wits, summarizing in verse the political, social and cultural events of the year, including the yellow fever, acts of Congress, and they take a few shots at Joel Barlow, their former colleague who had moved to France and taken up the cause of the French Revolution and Thomas Paine. The “Hasty-pudding Bard” had been “stealing Colonel Humphrey’s rhymes,” among other crimes, all of which they document in footnotes. The Political Green-House was later collected in the anthology The Echo, with Other Poems (1807). Title-leaf mounted, with early tears mended and some soiling near the imprint; residue of a bookplate on the front paste-down; very good copy.
