BAL 12096, second state of the first printing, state A of the publisher’s catalogue; Wright I, 1714. 8vo, original blind-stamped brown cloth, gilt lettering. 4 page publisher’s catalogue dated May 1, 1849, inserted between the front endpapers. ¶ A novella set in a small New England town about the local schoolmaster and would-be-poet, Mr. Churchill, and the newly installed minister, Arthur Kavanagh, and their friendship and mutual love of literature. The schoolmaster has numerous similarities to Longfellow. Spine a little faded; edges lightly rubbed; contemporary ownership signature erased from the front paste-down; very good copy.
