LOVELING, BENJAMIN, COMPILER

Latin and English Poems. By a Gentleman of Trinity College, Oxford.

London: Printed for C. Bathurst, 1741. Second edition, preceded by the first of 1738. Foxon L290. 12mo, contemporary sprinkled calf (rebacked), gilt rules. 4 pages of publisher’s ads. ¶ 37 poems, not quite half of them in English, by a variety of poets, including Stephen Dick (a translation into Latin, apparently by Loveling, of one of Dick’s poems), T. Gilbert and others identified with initials only. The subject matter ranges from translations to and from Latin, and poems on topics of local interests to young men in Cambridge and Oxford: ladies of pleasure, maddening love, etc. ¶ Embossed seal of George Fortescue on the front board. Front free endpaper repaired in one corner; edges a little rubbed; very good copy.
