New York: Ralph Trautmann, Publisher, [circa 1880]. First edition. 8 1/2 x 6 1/2, original terra-cotta cloth covers, blind- and gilt-stamped on both front and rear covers. Inside the front cover is a mounted plate with the title and list of portraits, with the publisher's imprint in the lower margin. The covers open accordion-style and contain 20 steel engraved portraits, mounted on linen backed boards, Each plate measures 7 x 5 inches and has gilt edges ¶ A handsome production to celebrate prominent American and English authors, including Emerson, Longfellow, Lowell, Poe, Bryant, Holmes, Whittier and Willis, among others, with Tennyson, Byron, Dickens, Scott and a few English. Cloth just slightly rubbed; fine copy. Uncommon.
