[London]: Published by T. M'Lean . . . Printed by C. Hullmandel, 1839-1841. First edition, uncolored issue. 3 vols, folio, disbound. Each volume consists of a lithographed title page, a dedication page with a list of plates, and 25 tinted lithograph views on stiff paper. Original quarter morocco boards with gilt lettering preserved. ¶ The first three issues of Nash’s famous series of interior and exterior views of medieval houses and castles. There was a fourth issue published in 1849, as well as a supplement (Views of the Interior and Exterior of Windsor Castle) in 1852. Joseph Nash (1809-1878) was a water-color painter and lithographer who studied architecture under Pugin. He became famous for his picturesque views of late Gothic buildings “which he enlivened with figures grouped to illustrate the habits of their owners in bygone days” - DNB. ¶ Endpapers present in vols 2 and 3. In the second issue is also present the four-page prospectus, with descriptions of each of the views. Previously bound edges of the plates in vol. 1 slightly rough; boards a bit rubbed; very light scattered foxing; in very good condition, enclosed in folio clamshell boxes.
