FARGUS, FREDERICK JOHN
Called Back. By Hugh Conway [pseud].
Bristol: J. W. Arrowsmith; London: Simpkin, Marshall, 1886. Second edition, later printing. Cf. Sadleir 608 (“83rd Thousand”) and see Wolff 1423 for the first edition and 1423a for this edition; NCBEL III, 1043. 8vo, original brown cloth, gilt lettering. ¶ A well-written, fast-paced mystery about a wealthy young blind man who inadvertently becomes involved in a murder and discovers that his marriage is at stake in solving the crime, which nonetheless he does after numerous adventures. Called Back, Fargus’ first book, was first published in 1884 in Arrowsmith’s Christmas Annual. It was a huge success and was immediately reissued in a new edition in cloth (as here) and sold more than 350,000 copies over the next four years. The first edition is rare. Cloth slightly worn; fine copy.
