A Chop House [caption-title].
Dublin: Prined [sic] by W. Allen, March 27th, 1782. 12 1/4 x 14 3/4 inches, engraving, original hand coloring. ¶ A contemporary Dublin engraving after the London original (which was dated 15 October 1781) and one of the few caricatures of Johnson to have appeared during his lifetime. Rowlandson’s more famous caricatures of Johnson and Boswell on their Scottish tour did not appear until 1786, the year after Johnson’s death. For a reproduction of this caricature (presumably the London version, as there are a few minute differences in detail), see John Wain, Samuel Johnson, plate 27. Although not apparently acknowledged by Johnson or Boswell, this caricature was well known in general and certainly known to its subjects: Henry Bunbury was on the fringe of Johnson’s circle (he married a pupil of Goldsmith’s, and was friends with Garrick and Reynolds). Printed on good quality paper and in fine condition.
