FIELDING, HENRY

Amelia.

London: Printed for A. Millar, 1752. First edition, presumed second state with “at the Folly” on page 191, line four in volume 3. Cross, pages 321-22; Rothschild 853. 4 vols, 12mo, vols 1 & 2 in modern period style calf which closely matches the contemporary bindings on vols 3 & 4, brown morocco labels, gilt rules and lettering. ¶ Fielding’s last novel which was published with high expectations following the success of Tom Jones, though it failed to live up to the pre-publication banter. Millar used two different printers and proclaimed in ads that “To satisfy the earnest demand of the publick, this work has been printed at four presses,” and as a consequence there are variations in the fonts used for volumes 1 & 3 and 2 & 4. Armorial bookplate of Leeds in vols 3 & 4; obviously a matched copy (vols 1 & 2 joined with 3 & 4), but very nicely done; very good copy.
