LONGFELLOW, HENRY WADSWORTH AND CHARLES SUMNER

Boston: Studio of Alexander Gardner, 1862. See D. Mark Katz’s Witness to an Era: The Life and Photographs of Alexander Gardner, page 72. Image 9 x 7 inches on a slightly later gray card stock 11.25 x 9.75 inches. Below the image is written in ink in a neat contemporary hand "Sumner and Longfellow." ¶ A fine large joint portrait of two of New England’s most prominent figures at the height of their careers. There are three known poses from this sitting, which are usually found - when found at all - in the carte de visite format. Copies of this large format are rare. On the verso of the mount is the notation in pencil “Alex Gardner 1862 / called 'The Politics & Poetry of New England.'” At the top center of the image is a 1.25 inch vertical mended tear, which clearly was mended before the image was mounted; some browning; in very good condition.
