NEAL, JOHN

Otho: A Tragedy, in Five Acts. [Bound with three other plays].

Boston: Published by West, Richardson and Lord, 1819. First edition. BAL 14857; American Bibliography 48825. 16mo, four volumes in one, contemporary sheep, red leather label, gilt lettering. ¶ Four contemporary plays bound together: three English plays reprinted by David Longworth in New York and one American original published in Boston. Neal’s Otho has a 21-page preface in which Neal explains the parallels in his plot to Byron’s Corsair and Manfred and comments: “It is probable that I may be charged with imitating Maturin in his Bertram; Lord Byron in all his heros, little and big; together with all the pirates, murderers, felons and knights of the modern school . . . ‘Be it so’.” Bertram by Maturin is one of the other three plays in this volume. Front hinge cracked, but cords holding; edges a little rubbed; very good copy.
