Barclay, Robert

The Anarchy of the Ranters and Other Libertines . . .

Philadelphia: Re-printed, and Sold by B. Franklin, and D. Hall, 1757. First American edition. Evans7840; Miller 655. Demy 8vo, contemporary sprinkled sheep, blind rules. ¶ Barclay's important defense of the Quakers was first published in London in 1676 and reprinted several times before being first published in America by Franklin and Hall on behalf of the Society of Friends. It is issued here together with Joseph Pike’s An Epistle to the National Meeting of Friends, In Dublin, which follows Barclay's piece and is paginated separately, but the signatures are continuous. Boards a little rubbed; some darkening to the paper, but overall a very nice copy.
