GILDON, CHARLES

The New Metamorphosis: or, Pleasant Transformation of the Golden Ass of Lucius Apuleius of Medaura. Alter'd and Improv'd to Modern Times and Manners; exposing the Secret Follies and Vices of Maids, Wives, and Widows, Nuns, Fryars, Jesuits, Statesmen, Courtiers, &c. Written in Italian by Carlo Monte Socio [pseud], Fellow of the Acaedmy of the Humorist in Rome, and Translated from the Vatican Manuscripts.

London: Printed for S. Briscoe and Sold by J. Morphew, 1708. First edition. McBurney, English ProseFiction 1700-1739, 40; NCBEL II, 1049 (which dates the earliest edition 1709) 2 vols, 8vo, contemporary Cambridge-style calf rebacked, gilt lettering. Seven engraved plates. ¶ An original work of fiction in the guise of a rewriting of Apuleius’ Golden Ass, which was a ruse for Gildon’s salacious, titillating tales about adulterers, whores, rakes, the scandalous affairs of the high and low, etc. Gildon’s New Metamorphosis was popular and went through several subsequent editions over a twenty-five year period, including one (1724) illustrated by William Hogarth. Foxing and browning - particularly to the signatures with lower quality paper; very good copy.
