Cabbages and Kings. By O. Henry [pseud].
New York: McClure, Phillips, 1905. A reprint of first edition of O. Henry’s first book, originally published in 1904. Cf. BAL 16270. 8vo, original decorated black cloth, orange lettering. ¶ A rare O. Henry presentation copy, inscribed by Porter and two others on the front free endpaper: at the top of the page is “My Dear Mrs. Wadsworth: Permit me to introduce to you my friend Mr. O. Henry. Gilman Hall, July 14, 1905.” This is followed by Porter's inscription: “Delighted to meet you, Mrs. Wadsworth; - and now since we are acquainted, may I ask you to accept this copy of my book with my compliments. O. Henry / July 14, 1905.” And below Porter's inscription in a third hand: “$1.12 - July 14, 1905. Received from Gilman Hall one dollar and 12/100 for one copy of 'Cabbages & Kings.' McPhillips, Clure [sic] & Co.” Gilman Hall was an editor at Ainslee magazine who was instrumental in helping Porter early in his career. Cloth soiled and rubbed; front inner hinge broken; good copy.
