HAWTHORNE, NATHANIEL

Nathaniel Hawthorne's Tales. In Two Volumes.

London: George Bell and Sons, 1875. .An omnibus-hybrid collected edition of Hawthorne's most famoustales, a later issue using the sheets of earlier English editions (each with separate title-pages), with a general title. It includes Twice-Told Stories, both series, Snow Image and Other Tales, The Scarlet Letter and The House of Seven Gables See BAL 7761 & 7663 and Clark A2.9.b & A19.2.c. 2 vols, 8vo, original green cloth, gilt lettering. ¶ Clark and BAL both describe attempts by Bell & Daldy to issue one- and two-volume editions of Hawthorne's Tales, but BAL could only locate a rebound copy of an 1866 issue, which apparently did not include The Scarlet Letter and The House of Seven Gables. Clark is also not clear on this, but is careful to note that "other secondary imprints are probable." OCLC and the NUC are of little help. George Bell & Sons is the firm that succeeded Bell & Daldy, and is here using the plates of those earlier issues, perhaps in a combination not heretofore done. The bibliography of this English edition of Hawthorne's Tales is unclear, but it was an early effort in England to bring Hawthorne's principal works into one edition, and all the issues of this are very scarce. Fine, bright copy.
