Birmingham: Printed by Cond Bros., 1884. First trade edition, preceded by privately printed issue for Lowell’s personal use only. BAL 13171. 8vo, original printed wrappers bound in modern three-quarter morocco, buckram cloth sides, gilt lettering. ¶ When Lowell served as the American Foreign Minister to the UK, he gave a series of lectures in various parts of England and Scotland, several of which were first separately published (as here) and later collected in Democracy and Other Addresses (1887). The first separate editions of those lectures are all very scarce. Wrappers and edges chipped, but skillfully repaired; very good copy.
