GIILMAN, CAROLINE HOWARD

Recollections of a Housekeeper. By Clarissa Packard [pseud].

New York: Harper & Brothers, 1834. First edition. Wright I, 1025; American Imprints 24621. 12mo, original tan cloth, gilt lettering. 28 page publisher's catalogue. ¶ The first book by Caroline Howard Gilman (1794-1888), who was born in Boston but moved to South Carolina when she married at a young age. Gilman adopted the South as her home and became an observant and keen writer about it. In this work and its popular sequel, Recollections of a Southern Matron (1838), she contrasts the sensibilities and attitudes of the North and South. Cloth a little darkened and worn; some light foxing; very good copy.
