MACDONALD, GEORGE
The Portent: A Story of the Inner Vision of the Highlanders, Commonly Called The Second Sight.
London: Smith, Elder, 1864. First edition. Bleiler, Supernatural Fiction, 1067; NCBEL III, 945; Wolff 29; not in Sadleir. 8vo, original white parchment spine, green cloth sides, gilt lettering, t.e.g. ¶ An early and scarce work by MacDonald, one of his tales of the supernatural, first serialized in Cornhill in 1860. Bleiler discourses on the narrative's “dreams, omens, paranormal hearing, an appearance of the ghost, suggestions of repeated patterns of fate and reincarnation, and many psychological oddities.” Robert Lee Wolff, in his study of MacDonald, The Golden Key, notes that this tale “occupies a transitional place between the fairy-tales and the Scotch novels.” Parchment somewhat discolored and spotted; cloth a little soiled; some slight foxing; very good copy.
