First English edition, limited issue, one of 200 numbered copies, signed by Mann. 2 vols, 4to, original white quarter vellum, multi-colored patterned boards, gilt lettering. Photogravure frontisportrait after a photograph by E. O. Hoppé in volume one; photogravure facsimile of a manuscript leaf as frontispiece in volume two. ¶ Set in a santiarium above Davos, this subtle novel of ideas depicts a world in decay and is Mann's large masterpiece, as Death in Venice is his small one. Edges and spine slightly rubbed; very nice copy, entirely unopened.
