Freeman, R. Austin
The Singing Bone.
London: Hodder and Stoughton, (1912). First edition. 8vo, original red cloth, gilt and black lettering. ¶ A major work of detective fiction, which introduces the concept of the “Inverted Tale,” in which, from the beginning, the reader knows the identity of the criminal and observes the exertions of the detective. Four of the five stories in this collection employ this approach; and one of these, “The Case of Oscar Brodski,” is regarded as the first narrative of the genre. Ellery Queen declared that “The Freeman 'inverted' tales were a monumental contribution to the development of the detective story, and from them have stemmed some of the great modern masterpieces of crime writing.” Early and contemporary ink inscriptions on the front free endpaper and paste-down. Edges rubbed; hinges starting; some browning of paper; but a very good copy.
