London: William Innys, 1713. First edition. Keynes, John Ray, A Bibliography, 105; for Dr. John Jeffries's bookplate, see Allen, American Book-Plates, page 89 (illustration) page 227, # 426. 2 vols in 1, demy 8vo, contemporary mottled calf rebacked period style, red morocco label, gilt rules, decorations and lettering. Frontis portrait and four folding plates. ¶ A posthumous work by the great English naturalist whose “varied and useful labours have justly caused him to be regarded as the father of natural history in this country”- DNB. Early in their scientific studies Ray (originally Wray; 1627-1705) and his friend Francis Willughby (1635-1672) "agreed to attempt a systematic description of the whole of the organic world"; and, when Willughby died young, Ray (using and acknowledging Willughby's research) took over the entire project. Most of Ray's works deal with botany, but he published a synopsis of quadrupeds and reptiles in 1693 and completed the present work in 1694; although it was not until 1713 that it was edited by his friend William Derham and published. ¶ From the library of Dr. John Jeffries with his bookplate on the front paste-down. Jeffries (1745-1819) is best remembered as the first American to fly, but his life was interesting in several ways. Born in Boston to the city's treasurer, Jeffries graduated from Harvard in 1763; trained for medicine in Some light foxing; very nice copy.
