Amsterdam: Apud Ludovicum Elzevirium, 1651. Early edition, and probably the first of three editionsissued in Amsterdam soon after the first edition, in quarto, was issued in London by Octavius Pulleyn earlier in 1651. Garrison & Morton 467 & 6146. Thick 12mo, contemporary blind-ruled calf rebacked period style (by Philip Dusel), red morocco label, gilt lettering. Copper-engraved vignette title-page. ¶ Garrison-Morton describes this as "the most important work on [embryology] to appear during the 17th century," and notes as well that “the chapter on midwifery in this book is the first work on that subject to be written by an Englishman.” The frontispiece--which is actually the title-page of the English issue of this edition--depicts Zeus seated on a pedestal within a temple, holding a large egg from which a variety of creatures are emerging. On the egg is engraved, "Ex ovo omnia," which neatly summarizes Harvey's treatise. This important plate is not often found in copies of the Elzevir edition. A couple of tiny nicks on the spine; occasional dampstaining within; a highly attractive, fresh copy with good margins.
