MITFORD, MARY RUSSELL, EDITOR

Lights and Shadows of American Life.

London: Henry Colburn and Richard Bentley, 1832. First edition. Sadleir 1750; NCBEL III, 749; Sabin49751. 3 vols, 8vo, original tan paper spines, blue boards and printed paper labels. ¶ Sixteen tales by Americans (“Native American Sketches” as Mrs. Mitford refers to them) reflective of the pioneer life, gathered by her from newspaper appearances and in a few cases manuscript transcripts by friends. The contributions are unsigned, but Mitford notes in the preface that among the contributors are probably Timothy Flint, James Kirke Paulding and Catharine Maria Sedgwick: “Farther I do not presume even to guess. Let our brother Authors then retain their mystery.” This was the second collection of American stories gathered by Mrs. Mitford; the first was Stories of American Life by American Writers (London, 1830). Both are scarce. Spine labels darkened; extremities rubbed; neat ink shelf numbers on front pastedowns; but a remarkably fine set in boards, as issued.
