GILLILAND, THOMAS

The Trap: A Moral, Philosophical, and Satirical Work; Delineating the Snares in Which Kings, Princes, and Their Subjects Have Been Caught, Since the Days of Adam; Including Reflections on the Present Causes of Conjugal Infidelity. Dedicated to the Ladies.

London: Printed for T. Goddard, 1809. Second edition; the first was published in 1808. OCLC locateseight copies of the first edition and three of this one. 2 vols in 1, 12mo, 19th century white quarter vellum, marbled paper sides, red moroccon label, gilt lettering and black-stamped decorations. Two frontispieces. Half-title in volume 1 (not called for in 2); errata leaf in volume 1; leaf of publisher's advertisements in volume two. ¶ A rambling, maddeningly unfocused survey of the effects of love and passion on otherwise rational men. Misogyny masked by mocking gallantry. Thomas Gilliland (fl. 1804-1816) was a miscellaneous writer who enjoyed modest success writing about contemporary theatre and actors. A caustic entry in the DNB notes that “he is said to have written for a living.” Covers a little rubbed; light foxing and soiling; very good copy, handsomely bound.
