Philadelphia: T. B. Peterson & Brothers, [ca. 1872]. Though Tom Racquet first appeared in 1847, NUCdoes not locate any American editions. Cf. Wolff 4423. 8vo, original pictorial woodcut wrappers. Illustrated with woodcuts after Robert Cruikshank. An interesting edition of what is apparently Manby’s only novel. Peterson & Brothers, which specialized in cheap reprints of English novels, apparently decided that Tom Racquet would sell better if passed off as a novel by the more widely read Smedley, and if the illustrations were credited to Robert Cruikshank’s better-known brother.
