London: Printed for T. Woodward and J. Peele, 1725. First edition. NCBEL II, 1770. 8vo, contemporary paneled calf, reddish-brown morocco label, gilt lettering. ¶ An important biography of the 17th century free-thinking English clergyman, William Chillingworth (1602-1644), who made significant contributions toward the advancement of religious tolerance in England. The biographer, Pierre Des Maizeaux (1673-1745), a journalist who came to England from his native France, became well known among the English intelligentsia of the early 18th century, including Locke, Hume, Bayle, Anthony Collins and Addison.
