London: Printed for T. Payne and Son and J. Robson, 1776. First edition. NCBEL II, 1724. 8vo, modern blue-gray boards period style, printed paper label. Without the half-title. ¶ An attack on Gibbon's interpretation of the growth of Christianity in the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire. Chelsum (1738-1801), a clergyman and scholar, was one of the first of many to take offense at Gibbon's historical analysis, which he said was “a subtle poison of the most dangerous tendency” - as quoted in the DNB online. Chelsum was also a collector of prints and in 1786 published a history of mezzotint engraving. Very good copy. Uncommon.
