NCBEL II, 1724. 8vo, contemporary sprinkled calf, red morocco label, gilt rules and lettering. ¶ A fierce attack on Gibbon by a young historian, who accuses him of numerous inaccuracies and even plagiarism. Gibbon fired back with his Vindication (1779), to which Davis in turn responded with his Reply to Mr. Gibbon's Vindication. See the DNB online for a brief biography of Davis (1756-1784), who died not long after this dispute with Gibbon. Edges somewhat rubbed and worn; very good copy.
